Massive earthquake measuring 6.4 on Richter scale strikes off Chilean coast

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has struck off the coast of central Chile near the town of Tongoy, causing buildings in the capital Santiago to shake.

But according to seismologists, it “did not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami”. No casualties or damage have been reported.

Chile is part of the 'Pacific Ring of Fire”' which is especially vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis. The largest earthquake ever recorded was a 9.5 bone-shaker that hit the central coast of Chile in 1960.
